Land Ownership

Whether you're managing land now or planning ahead for the future, we've got you covered with practical advice and resources to help you make the best decisions for yourself and your land.

Selling or Leasing Land

Farmland for a New Generation NY (FNG) is a farm linking website designed by American Farmland Trust to help beginning farmers and landowners connect, keeping our beautiful farmland in production! Posting your property on FNG will make it visible to NY farmers in need of land. We’ve created a handy guide to help you create a strong listing.

Protecting Your Land

Conservation easements can be a great way to protect your property now and in the future. A conservation easement is a legal agreement that protects a piece of land from being developed or changed. It does not affect your ability to own, live on, and use the land, but protects it from harmful development no matter who owns it in the future. There may also be tax benefits related to an easement. Visit the Land Trust Alliance website to learn more and find a land trust near you.

Succession Planning

Any time is a great time to start thinking about the future of your farm. Farm succession, also sometimes called farm transfer or transition, is the transfer of farm income, assets and management to a successor. Land for Good has developed a Where Do I Start? workbook to help you think through all the decisions that need to be made in transitioning your farm.

Additional resources:

  • NY Farm Net offers free succession planning consultations.

  • Land for Good has a wealth of resources in English and Spanish to help navigate the challenges of land ownership, including guides for assessing your land and clarifying your goals.
