In order to satisfy the demand, the United States imports a lot of goat meat. In 2014, almost 44 million pounds of goat meat was imported. Much of this is consumed on the Eastern Seaboard of the US. In 2017, it is estimated that there are 2.1 million head of goats in the United States, with only 17,000 of them in New York State.
This means that there is a real opportunity for meat goat producers to grow and expand given our proximity to this unsatisfied market. This workshop will help existing meat goat producers improve their management and quality of their product. New producers will also have the opportunity to understand the breadth of management required and will hear from people already successfully participating in this growing market.
